2nd Annual Summer BBQ

It’s time again for that grand old tradition, our Annual UM Seattle Alumni Club summer Barbecue! (This will be our second!) Last year’s event was such a success we’ve relocated to a larger downtown venue, at the home of local alumnus and Seattle institution Brook Stanford.

Come join us and celebrate summer, talk football, and meet with fellow Seattle alumni for a family-friendly afternoon. If the weather forecast can be trusted, we should have just about perfect weather for the event.

Hold on to your hats — we’ve got local Wolverine events of every variety coming up in the next few weeks!

Habitat for Humanity on August 7

The participants in our last Habitat for Humanity event found it so rewarding that they didn’t want to have to wait a whole year to do it again, so we have another one scheduled for U-M Alums on August 7, 2010. This will be an all-day event, from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, and it will again be in West Seattle.

Chuck Chan is organizing the event for us, so please let him know if you are interested in participating, and he can sign you up and get you additional details.

Bilal’s Stand screening at SIFF

Bilal’s Stand, a feature film written and directed by University of Michigan filmmaker Sultan Sharrief, will be screening on Monday, May 31, at 6:30 pm, and Wednesday, June 2 at 4:00 pm, as part of the Seattle International Film Festival.

Annual Meeting at the Pyramid Alehouse

We will be holding the U-M Seattle Club’s annual meeting on Tuesday, May 18 at the Pyramid Alehouse in downtown Seattle, from 5:30 - 8:30.

The primary purpose of our annual meeting is to discuss club operations and to elect our board of directors and officers for the coming year. Our club calendar runs from July through June, so newly elected officials join our board starting in July.

However our annual meeting is also a great time to socialize with other alumni.

Mariners vs. Tigers

This is the last day to purchase tickets to the Mariners-Tigers games coming up this weekend on April 17 and 18. We still have tickets available for both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, but Tuesday, April 13 is the last day to purchase these. Ticket sales have been brisk, so you should be sitting with a good group of U-M alums no matter which day you choose. See our Web site for all the details, and to purchase tickets via PayPal.

Keep Your Alumni Association Connection Active

I am often asked at our events how people can join our local club. The answer is always the same: if you are a member of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan (AAUM), and you have updated your U-M records to indicate that you are a resident of the greater Seattle area, then you are already a member of our local club: there are no separate dues to pay.

On the other hand, this answer presumes that you have kept your Alumni Association membership and address current.

We have several events coming up below that require your immediate attention if you would like to participate, so be sure to read these over carefully and respond quickly for any you are interested in!

Community Service Day

SATURDAY, MAY 1
8:45 - 4:00

West Seattle
Habitat for Humanity

The Alumni Association’s Clubs Council is again sponsoring a club-wide community service day on the same day as the U-M spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 1.

Joint Basketball Watch Party with Michigan State

The Michigan basketball team has a match with their Michigan State rivals coming up on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 4:00 pm Pacific Time, and our local Big Ten brethren from that other state school have offered to join us at our regular Belltown haunt at Buckley’s and make a joint event of it.

Only four spaces left!

We had all 40 seats taken within a few days after sending out the prior invitation to this event, but we’ve had a few cancellations, and now have four seats left, so we are re-sending. Please register at EventBrite (per instructions below) if you would like to attend!

Given the tough economic times we are going through, one of the top priorities for your club’s Board of Directors for the 2009-2010 year has been to put together a Networking event for U-M alums.
