Our recent networking event was a great success. I talked to many people who said that this was the first club event they had attended, and everyone I talked to said that they appreciated us hosting something like this.

Thanks go to board member John Hayner and club member Maicie Jones for organizing the event.

I also want to thank our three alums who spoke at the event.

Our first football watch party at Buckley’s on Sep. 5 was a great success. We packed the house with excited Wolverines, and everyone enjoyed watching our football team getting off to an exciting start.

The University of Michigan Club of Seattle was pleased and honored to learn recently that we were selected by the Alumni Association as one of the recipients of their Club Awards for 2008. We were selected as the Outstanding Club in what is known as region 5, consisting of all clubs with 3,000 - 6,000 alumni in their area.

Following is the text of the award.

The Seattle club hosted a wide range of athletic, social, and cultural events to engage U-M alumni of all ages.

Thanks to incoming students, parents, current students and alumni who made our 2008 Student sendoff another resounding success.

We are always excited to meet the fresh new students as they prepare for their adventure in Ann Arbor.

Special thanks go to Wes & Margo Rogers, who hosted the event, and to Michael Tarlowe, our head of Student Recruiting, for organizing.

The Wolverines compiled 271.5 points to finish in the top 10 for the eighth straight season.

Michigan senior Alex Vanderkaay won the 400-yard individual medley for the second time in two years Friday at the NCAA swimming and diving championships in Federal Way, Washington.

Vanderkaay, who won the event in 3:41.58, became the first Wolverine to win back-to-back NCAA titles since Peter Vanderkaay, Alex’s older brother, won the 500-yard freestyle in 2005-06.

As many of you know, I have taken on an incredible challenge. This September, I’ll be walking 60 miles over the course of three days, camping — yes, camping! — out at night with thousands of other women and men taking this journey with me.

Who was responsible for designing the helmets for the U-M football team?

Michigan’s famed winged helmet dates back to 1938, when Fritz Crisler arrived from Princeton University with his penchant for detail and style. “Michigan had a plain black helmet and we wanted to dress it up a little,” Fritz recalled. “We added some color (maize and blue) and used the same basic helmet I had designed at Princeton.”
